Field Testing Expedition

Join ReefSave in testing some newly built “no-weld” lionfish traps. The boat will depart before 7 A.M. from Olympus Dive Center in Moorehead City, North Carolina, which was Voted #1 in North America for Big Marine Life. North Carolina is home to the Sand Tiger shark.

Your participation helps to provide enough seats to fill the minimum requirements for a trip. So, even if you decide just to do fun dives your participation still helps the cause.

On this ReefSave Research and Testing Expedition you will join Dr. Steve Gittings of NOAA, inventor of the lionfish "Purse Trap" and the ReefSave.org trap team when we will conduct "in water" testing of the "No-Weld Lionfish Purse Traps" that were built by Dr. Gittings and the ReefSave volunteers at the Trap Build II Event on February 9 - 10, 2019 in Mechanicsville, VA.

Working closely with our corporate partner Olympus Dive Center in Morehead City, N.C. this full day charter for deep water (100' - 130') testing of the traps will test the traps in real Atlantic Ocean Conditions with current and waves.

Please note that there are unpredictable weather conditions in the Western Atlantic Ocean that may prohibit diving on May 6, 2019. In that event this private charter’s alternate date is Tuesday, May 7, 2019.

Citizen scientist volunteers that choose to participate in the trap testing will:

  • Deploy and Retrieve traps,
  • observe how the "No -Weld Rebar Trap" performs
  • Test changes in performance with variations of weigh or floats
  • Rig traps with cameras
  • SCUBA divers can video and photo the traps' profiles as they descend and are retrieved
  • Help collect data under the direction of Dr. Gittings.
  • Fun diving after the work is done.
